THE BUILDING

The entire five-story building was built by local people from local materials over a two year period. The center is houses a workshop, two kitchens, four bathrooms, a classroom, library, living and dining area, and an office. NILCED is also outfitted with a solar powered hot water system, a UV water filtration unit, high-speed wireless Internet and gas and electricity throughout the building. The entire space has been weatherproofed to endure the effects of the harsh monsoon season.

PUZZLES

Most Nepalis have never had the opportunity to play with puzzles or learn the basic problem solving skills associated with them. Two years ago Daniel became acquainted with Tineke Casey, the Managing Director of the Canada Foundation For Nepal. They are currently in the process of producing a catalogue of 20 puzzles and training local people on how to make them.

BAMBOO

The majority of furniture in the building was constructed in NILCED’s own workshop by local carpenters, including structural items such as door and window frames, staircases and floors. Bamboo from the farm was harvested, dried, and used to make beds, curtain rails, and storage units. Furthermore, the specially designed railings circling each floor of the building were cut and welded in the workshop.

EDUCATION

NILCED is a fully functioning state of the art education center, and both the on site classroom as well as the outdoor learning area are regularly used as communal learning spaces by local children. Most recently, in conjunction with a Canadian Montessori-affiliated NGO, an outdoor afternoon art class was organized for over 30 local children to celebrate the Nepali holiday of Tihar.
